Saving energy makes sense whether you are building an off-grid home or just looking to save energy consumption. A good place to start is to use compact fluorescent (CF) lights in places that you use the light often. Regular incandescent light bulbs are better heaters than light emitters. Another good place is to utilize power bars to stop phantom loads. A phantom load is found in appliances that consume electricity when just plugged in to your electrical outlet, they do not have to be turned on.. Entertainment centers, TV's, stereos, VCR's all have phantom loads. Some will consume up to 35 watts, 24hrs./day 365 days/year. That equals over 300kWh per year!
